Environmental Design & Tiles

Since we will see the upper city in the game mainly, I sketched the first level's environment and background as an idea and beginning point. The first level is in a city which uses and controls deforestation for themselves.

The sky will be full of poisons and chemicals because of the oil burned at the top level.

In the game, there will be farmers on land working for orange people to grow soy and things they need like palm oil and more, they will live in the bubbles so it might look like a small village and we can see greens, but in fact, the plants around them are made by plastic except the ones they grow.

Houses are white and simple, the clothes are basic and suitable for farming, and they wear gloves and mainly white and orange colours, which are the colours of the orange people.

(watercolour and acrylic (Trudy's lesson) We can see the tags on the greens, leaves and grass since it is fake in this scene, this is where Poko is on her way to the oil factory. In here, we can also see the carrier bots flying around and trucks carrying oil.

There is also an oil pool around the factory which will be another puzzle to solve for the players.

Personally, I liked how the colours turned out and the figure of Poko, maybe adding more colour to her bubble might've helped to have better better-looking and obvious-looking bubble.

In my first sketch for the first level of the upper city (after the tutorial), we can see the lack of movement, dynamics, and perspective. I didn't like the first form of the background so I decided to do it again... It needs to be a city where we see all about the consumption culture and get to know the orange people.

First Level: Upper city (9 hours, 23minutes)

On the third try, I added more perspective, colour and movement. The colour combinations are mainly purple and the colours like orange, yellow and other bright colours make them pop out and add a dynamic vibe and energy. By adding small details like a robot changing a light bulb, cutting out cables, billboards, and flying ships, It gained more life. In the sky, we see these poisonous clouds which we give the message of air pollution. We also see the purple sun which is a human-made light source since the sky is all covered in purple gas.

this is the sketch form of the city (first level)

tutorial-level background and environment design

Firstly we wanted to start from the bubble where we could see the outside of the bubble and the other bubbles from far away. this is the unfinished version of it since we didn't have time to fully add this part because of little problems in work.

Tutorial: Cave (3 hours, 32minutes)

After starting at the bubble, normally rad will lead us into a cave where we start to learn about the mechanics of the cave but also collect three key pieces to use an elevator or teleport machine to go to the first level of the upper city. In the cave, I wanted to use mainly purple colours and make it repeatable since we need it longer. I added different shades of purple, which became a kind of signature colour for the environment of this project, and added more depth which we also used in the real game to add a more realistic and perspective feeling to the game. By adding a bright purple colour to the dark one which is the closest layer to us, I created a light-like effect.

TILES

The first leaf we can see is the collectable in the game which we will use to make seed to grow up and level up to transform into its giantic form. Findable on every level.

The second billboard we can see is for the tutorial and first level, it will give us a clue about the story of the game. it is about deforestation and soy and palm oil farms.

Thirdly, the pink billboard is also for the tutorial and first level and it's about soy and meat production.

The fourth billboard is about deforestation and it gives us a message in a sarcastic way by saying "Don't worry". It is also for tutorial and first level.

The fifth one is a cut down tree which we can see that the face of it is different from the one on the billboard. It is mainly for tutorials.

The sixth one is again a billboard about soy and meat production and so deforestation too. it is also for tutorial and first level.

The seventh one is a flying truck for carrying the cutdown trees and soy, we can see the mist down which shows us the fossil fuel effects (it flies by burning the oil and gas and creates a bad effect on the environment so the soil we see in the cave is purple.)

The next one is a flying and moving metal tile and it is for tutorial and first level.

The ninth one is also a flying tile but it won't move. it is for tutorial and first level.

The tenth one is a rock tile for the tutorial.

With that one, we can see two different rock hills for the tutorial level.

The next one is also a rock tile for the cave.

We also see two ivy tiles, the purple one is sick and it will leave a poison effect on Poko, the second one is for the player to use inside the game to navigate through the level with its green Poko powers (we will take it from talking tulips)

The next three ones are: a box for carrying the supplies to the orange people, a light, and an orange people sign which shows us that it is their working space.

The first three pieces are the key pieces we will use in the tutorial level to use the teleport.

The orange tiles are the lasers and we can see them at any level.

The machine we saw in the middle is the teleportation machine we use for Poko to go to the upper city. One of them is with key and the other one is without.

The last one is the first form of the tiles in the city which I decided not to use and asked one of my friends to do another one which we use in the real game.

The purple ones are normally for the cave and it shows us how unhealthy the soil is inside the cave since the carrier trucks are poisoning it but also it is darker than outside.

Brighter shade ones are normally for the outside part of the cave but also usable for the cave too, it is again not healthy.

In both of them, we can see the purple ivies which is also a part of the general concept.

In the digital form, we can see the power up for seed, enemies protecting the key pieces and acid place where we need to avoid.

I mainly wanted to teach about the basic mechanics, run, jump, walk, shoot.

REFERENCES

As a reference, I mainly used Pinterest to find inspiration and colour combinations and we can see the effects of them in my version. One of my biggest influences was the Fifth Element movie and the city in it the shapes, buildings, construction plan and style, and colours, all affected my final design. I also looked at games like Terraria and Eastward for the shapes and the style of the city.
